How shaping sound manually alters the creative flow.

In the age of software synthesis and generative AI there is a special need for tactile sound design. Needless to say that after scrolling through tons of uninspired and uninspiring AI-music online confusing algorithms and audiences alike, interacting with a real instrument breathes fresh air into any musician's life. As a new addition to the studio, the Moog Subsequent 37 is exactly that: a real instrument full of character, warmth and potential for direct expression. By engaging with its physical interface, musicians and producers can break through creative blocks and explore new sonic territories.

If you know me, you might be aware of my pickiness when it comes to hardware Synths. In the past I tried out several machines and although I had some fun ultimately deemed them unessecary for the studio. Most if not all of their sonic qualities could be emulated easily on the computer. But then this instrument arrived. And it felt completely different.

Physical Interaction with Sound

One of the most significant advantages of the Subsequent 37 is its hands-on controls. The abundance of knobs, switches, and sliders – all tangible at a glance – allows users to manipulate sound in real-time, fostering a deeper connection with the music being created. This physical interaction encourages experimentation, as tweaking parameters such as filter resonance, drive, feedback or lfo and oscillator waveforms can lead to unexpected and inspiring results. This invitation to be curious within the designed limitations of an instrument lets even the most screen-addicted sound designer delve into a universe of raw curiosity.

The layout of the Subsequent 37 is designed for intuitive use, enabling quick adjustments without the distraction of complex menus or screens. This streamlined workflow allows artists to focus more on creativity rather than technicalities. As a result, sound design becomes a fluid process where ideas can be realized and refined almost instantaneously.

In addition to its oscillators, why not plug in your electric guitar as an external source and go crazy with the wonderfully thick and creamy filter?

The warm, rich sound of the Moog Subsequent 37 adds another layer of inspiration. Its analog circuitry provides a depth and character that digital instruments often lack. This unique sound quality can ignite creative ideas and motivate producers to explore genres and styles they may not have considered before.

After trying out the instrument for a couple of days, I was certain that all musicians working with me in the studio should be able to experience this inspiring way of sculpting their sound. No debate – the instrument is now a proud part of Studio MAXIMEDES ready for your exploration!
